Prayer Is Recognizing Our Dependence On God

J. I. Packer wrote in his book, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God:

“The prayer of a Christian is not an attempt to force God’s hand, but a humble acknowledgment of helplessness and dependence.  When we are on our knees, we know that it is not we who control the world; it is not in our power, therefore, to supply our needs by our own independent efforts; every good thing that we desire for ourselves and others must be sought from God, and will come, if it comes at all, as a gift from His hands.”

By praying, we recognize three things:

     1.  Our helplessness and dependence on Him.

     2.  That we are not in control of our lives.

     3.  We must seek God for every good thing we desire for ourselves and others.

Sadly, if we cannot see how God can answer, we tend to doubt that He will answer.

All to often our level of trust in God depends on our ability to anticipate or foresee the way in which He might answer our prayers, rather than in our belief and trust in His Power. We pray, but if we were really honest with ourselves and with God, if we had the courage to express our thoughts out loud, they might come out something like this:

"You know, Lord, this is just a long shot. I don’t see

how You can possibly do this or pull this off, but I’m

going to pray for it and just see if something happens.”

Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."

Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

One way we fear God is by depending on Him even when we cannot see how He might bring something to pass.

Isaiah 55:8 & 9 (KJV)

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Our prayers should be both an acknowledgment of our own helplessness with out Him and our dependence upon Him. Our prayers should be an expression of our confidence that God can meet our needs in ways we could never anticipate or foresee.

Everyday We Make A Choice

To keep our own will - or - to do His will.

When we come into His presence,

we give up the right to be right.

Proverbs 15:8 (KJV)

“The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.”

Proverbs 15:29 (KJV)

“The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Sometimes When I Pray It Feels Like God

Isn’t Listening. Why Is That?

James 4:6 (KJV)

“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

Some definitions for Pride are:

  Arrogance

  Overconfidence

  Self-importance

  Conceit

  Self-assurance

  Haughtiness

  Putting on of airs

  Self-satisfaction

  Self-righteousness

Take a minute and think about the meanings of these words. The root of all these words is SELF-SUFFICIENCY.

Pride tries to control and manipulate us by:

  Brute Force

  Cunning

  Deviousness

  Lying

  Manipulation

  Hostility

  Resentment

  Bitterness

  Offence

  Goody-goody

  Untrustworthiness

  Unfriendliness

  Divide & conquer

  Lack of sympathy

  Affection

Now think on these words and their definitions. Pride is very manipulative and controlling.  It is really scary and difficult to allow ourselves to be vulnerable. Yet, this is exactly what God wants from us - our vulnerabilities. In our vulnerability we must humble ourselves.

Some definitions for Humility are:

  Modesty

  Silence

  Peace

  Stillness

  Discretion

  Carefulness

  Caution

  Unassuming

  Unpretentious

  Meekness

  Submissiveness

  Gentleness

  Mildness

  Timidity

  Quietness

  Shyness

  Carefulness

  Carefulness

  Watchfulness

  Caution

  Concern

  Prudence

  Good judgment

  Responsibility

Humility is not only an attitude, but a life style, and should live in us in such a way as to say:

I am not my own power

I do not know the best way

  I am not above time

I do not know the right way

  I am not truth

  I am not perfect

  I am not law

  I am not messiah

His way is not my way

  Recognizing God

  God's Strength

  God's ability

  God's wisdom

  God's love

  God's salvation in and for

  all things

It is okay for me not to be

  perfect

Humility cause total trust in Him. True humility causes us to give the right to right.

Prayer Is Communion

I talk He listens - and - He talks I listen.

I encourage you to always go into prayer with pad and pencil.  This is one way of showing Father we are really interested in what He has to say, and that we are dependent and reliant upon Him.

Prayer

Lord, I want to recognize You in every part of my life, in everything

I do, I am helpless without You. I realize You are a Sovereign God

and You and You alone are in total control of not only my life, but the

whole universe. Please help me not to fear or doubt, but to trust You

in every area of my life. I desire to trust Your wisdom and

understanding. Expose the area's of my life where there is pride. I

want to stay humble before You, submissive to You and Your plan

for my life. I thank you Lord, for helping me to give up to need to be

right, and to put all my trust in You. I wait on You now to speak into

my heart and life. Thank you for talking with me and teaching me

Your ways.

The Prayer God  Will  Hear Every Time

Prayer is more than the recitations of well-known phrases. Prayer is the outpouring of our hearts. The turning to God as our source in our time of need, believing that He alone is able to deliver us from all our problems and that He alone is the answer to our every question. Prayer is powerful communication with God.

So why are we troubled by questions like these:

·   “Why when I pray, don’t’ I fell better?”

·   “Why does my time with the Lord just seem to wear me out?”

·   “How am I supposed to pray?”

·   “How come I seldom see answers to my prayers?”

·   “Is there something wrong with me?”

·   “Am I not good enough for God to listen to?”

James 4:3 (KJV)

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”

The New Living Bible says it this way;

“And even when you do ask, you don’t get because your whole motive is wrong you want only what will give you pleasure.”

So then, how can we know the prayers we pray will be effectual prayers? By praying His Word, God’s Word, as we search it out covers every area of our lives:

  Vocation   Healing
  Finances   Marriage
 Singleness   Salvation
 Children   Relationships

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

The promise of The LORD is His Word cannot return void. Therefore, it only makes sense for us to pray the Word of God, for His Word is always His will for our lives.

Psalms 103:20 (KJV)

“Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.”

As we pray His Word, we become that voice that the angels hearken or listen to.

Using as examples the King James and Amplified versions of the Bible, let us explore how to take God’s Word and turn it into an effective prayer life.

I am trusting that The Word will come alive to you in a way you have never seen it before, and that you will receive applicable application to your lives as you learn how to search The Word out for your needs.

Wisdom

Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

James 1:5 (KJV)

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

Prayer

Lord, I need Your wisdom, You said wisdom is the principal thing, the most important thing I need in my life, and You know what I need more than I know what I need. So Father, I am asking You for Your wisdom, and with that wisdom give me understanding. I believe because I have asked according to Your Word, You will liberally give Your wisdom and understanding to me.  Thank you Lord.

The Will Of God In Your Life

Ephesians 5:17 (AMP)

“Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.”

Prayer

Lord, it is not my desire to be vague, thoughtless and/or foolish, but I desire to understand and grasp what Your will is for my life. Please help me to understand I have the mind of Christ. I want to hold Your thoughts and purposes deep within me. Thank you Lord.

1 Corinthians 2:16b (AMP)

“…We have the mind of Christ, the Messiah, and do hold the thoughts (feelings and purposes) of His heart.”

Prayer

Father, I thank you that You have my best interest at heart, and that through You I can have the mind of Christ.  Thank You Lord.

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Prayer

Father, I pray You would please help me to keep my heart with all diligence. Thank you Lord.

Ephesians 1:16-19 (AMP)

“I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers. [For I always pray] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation – of insight into mysteries and secrets – in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him. By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints – His set-apart ones. And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, and demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His [own right hand in the heavenly [places]. Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named – above every title that can be conferred – not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come.”

Prayer

Lord, I ask You to grant me the spirit of wisdom and revelation – of insight into mysteries and secrets – in the deep and intimate knowledge of You. By having the eyes of my heart flooded with light, so that I can know and understand the hope to which You have called me and how rich is Your glorious inheritance in me – Your set apart one. So I can know and understand what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of Your power in me, and for me as I believe, as demonstrated in the working of Your mighty strength which You exerted in Christ when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your own right hand in the heavenly places. Far above all and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named – above every title that can be conferred – not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and world which are to come. Thank you Father.

Salvation For Loved Ones

Outline of Prayer for the unsaved

1.    It is the will of God that they be saved.

2.    Satan has blinded the eyes of the lost.

3.    Command Satan to stop his work in the person’s life.

4.    Repent for their sins and ask for mercy.

5.    Declare that his/her soul is bought by the blood of Jesus Christ.

6.    Ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit to convict them of sin and enlighten  their spiritual understanding

7.    Declare that all the work of Satan in their life and minds are destroyed.

8.    Imagine them saved and give thanks to God.

Ephesians 1:16-18 (AMP)

“I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers.

[For I always pray] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation – of insight into mysteries and secrets – in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him.

By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints – His set-apart one.”

These verses are a promise you can stand on for the salvation of your loved ones. (This is one of my favorites)

Job 22:21-30 (AMP)

“Acquaint now yourself with Him [agree with God and show yourself to be conformed to His will] and be at peace; by that [you shall prosper and great] good shall come to you.

Receive, I pray you, the law and instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.

If you return to the Almighty [and submit and humble yourself before Him], you will be built up; if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents,

If you lay gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brook [considering them of little worth],

And make the Almighty your gold and the Lord your precious silver treasure, then you will have delight in the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God.

Then you will have delight in the Almighty and you will lift up your face to God

You will make your prayer to Him, and He will hear you and you will pay your vows.

You shall also decide and decree a thing and it shall be established for you and the light [of God’s favor] shall shine upon your ways.

When they make you low, you will say, There is a lifting up; and the humble person He lifts up and saves.

He will even deliver the one [for whom you intercede] who is not innocent; yes, he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."

As I acquaint myself with You, and agree to be conformed to Your will and live in Your peace. I will prosper and great good shall come to me.

I receive the law and instruction from Your mouth, and lay up Your words in my heart.

As I submit and humble myself before You, I will be built up and put away unrighteousness far from me.

If I lay gold in the dust and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brook, and consider them of little worth, and make You my gold and You my precious silver treasure, then I will have delight in You, and You will lift up my face to You.

I will have delight in You Lord and I will lift up my face to You.

I will make my prayer known to You and You will hear my and I will pay Your vows.

I shall also decide and decree a thing and it shall be established for me and the light of Your favor will shine upon all my ways.

When those around me make me low, I will say, “There is a lifting up and the humble person You will lift up and save.”

You will even deliver the one for whom I intercede who is not innocent; who does not know You as their Lord, yes, they will be delivered through the cleanness of my hands. Thank you Father.

Praying the Word Over Our Christian Privileges

Heavenly Father, I come in the Name of Jesus to the throne of grace that I may receive Mercy, and find Grace to help in my time of need, (Heb. 4:16).  Jesus I come with confidence because You are my High Priest, and the Mediator between God and me, (Heb 4:15, 1 Tim. 2:5).  Jesus I know that You can understand and sympathize with my weaknesses and infirmities, because You were tempted as I am, (Heb 4:15).  You are the Lord of my life and I’m saved, (Ro. 10:9). Father, before, I was dead in my trespasses and sins. I was far away from You, but now by the blood of Jesus, I have been reconciled, and brought near to You, and I belong to the household of God (Eph. 2:1,12,13,16,19). Thank you Father, that You have delivered me from the power of darkness, of Satan, and have translated me into the Kingdom of Your Son, Jesus, in whom I have redemption through His blood, and the forgiveness of sins, (Col. 1:13,14). I have confessed my sins and You have been faithful and just to forgive me and I am cleansed form all unrighteousness, (1 Jn. 1:9). Now I am a new creature in Christ Jesus, old things have passed away, behold all things are become new, (2 Co. 5:17).  thank you Father, that because I have received

Jesus and believed on His Name, I have received the right to become Your child, (Jn. 1:12).  You have made me the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, (2 Co. 5:20).  I know that I’m not saved because of any works of righteousness that I have done, but I’m saved and justified by Your Grace, through faith, (Tit. 3:5,7; Eph 2:7).

Thank you Heavenly Father that the fruit of the Spirit is growing in my life; love joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control, (Ga 5:22). Thank you Father for the Holy Spirit, who teaches me all things, and guides me into all truth, (Jn. 14:13; 14:26). As I come to know the truth, the truth shall set me free, (Jn. 8:32). Enlighten the eyes of my understanding; flood the eyes of my heart with light, so that I may know what is the hope of my calling, and surpassing greatness of your power toward me. Thank you that, according to the riches of Your glory, You strengthen me with might by Your Spirit in my inner man, my innermost being.  You have helped me to know the love of Christ, which passes all knowledge that I might be filled with all the fullness of You, my God. Thank you God, that because of Your power at work within me, You are able to carry out Your purpose and do superabundantly far above all that I ask, or think, infinitely beyond my highest prayers, desires, thoughts hopes or dreams.

(Eph. 1:18,19; 3:16,19,20).

Thank you, Father, that I am not conformed to this world, because I am being transformed and changed by the renewal of my mind, that I may prove what is Your good, acceptable, and perfect will in my life, (Ro. 12:2).  How glorious it is to know that I am being constantly transfigured and changed into your very own image from glory to glory, by Your Spirit, as I behold Your glory, (Co 3:18).  Help me not to give any place, opportunity, or foothold to the Devil in my life, (Eph. 4:27). Thank you Father, that when I submit to You and resist the Devil in the Name of Jesus, he flees from me in terror, (Mk. 16:17; Jas. 4:7). Thank you that You have given me authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall in any way harm me, (Lk. 10:19).  Thank you that You are watching over this Word, to perform it in my life, (Jer.1:12). In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen (Jn. 14:14).
