What If I Disagree With My Spiritual Authority?

We all know that it is God’s plan for each one of us to honor those who are in Leadership and Authority positions. However, from time to time, you may find yourself in a place of disagreement, or perhaps you may even have a complete difference of opinion with those in Leadership or with the person who is in Authority over you.

Genesis 9:18–27 tells us of three young men named Shem, Ham, and Japheth who both honored and dishonored their father, Noah. Noah, by blood, was their natural authority as their father and was their Spiritual Authority and Leader because God ordained it to be so. Let’s look at this portion of Scripture, and we will find a Principle (a principle shows us how to apply God’s code, standard, or rule of conduct to our lives today). This Principle shows us the effects of honoring and/or dishonoring, the Leadership and Authorities God has placed in our lives.

"The sons of Noah who came out of the ship were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. 19) These are the three sons of Noah; from these three the whole Earth was populated. 20) Noah, a farmer, was the first to plant a vineyard. 21) He drank from its wine, got drunk and passed out, naked in his tent. 22) Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and told his two brothers who were outside the tent. 23) Shem and Japheth took a cloak, held it between them from their shoulders, walked backwards and covered their father’s nakedness, keeping their faces turned away so they did not see their father’s exposed body.
24) When Noah woke up with his hangover, he learned what his youngest son had done. 25) He said, Cursed be Canaan! A slave of slaves, a slave to his brothers! 26) Blessed be GOD, the God of Shem, but Canaan shall be his slave. 27)
God prosper Japheth, living spaciously in the tents of Shem. But Canaan shall be his slave."  (Genesis 9:18-27 The Message Bible)

First of all, the lives of Noah’s wife, his sons, and their wives were saved from the flood because of Noah’s relationship with God, not because of their relationship with God. “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.” (Genesis 6:18 bolding mine)

When Shem and Japheth honored their father by taking a garment, laying it on both their shoulders and going in backward and covering the nakedness of their father, God honored them by pronouncing a blessing upon them through their father.

They recognized and acknowledged that Noah was their authority as their father, as well as and their Spiritual Authority, The Anointed of God. The Called of God. The Blessed of God. And he must be honored as such. If there was a problem, if dad had made a mistake, they had to recognize that God was big enough to handle it Himself. They were not to make a judgment call, or speak against their Authority and/or their Leader.

Ham, on the other hand, got involved in what is referred to as rebellion and white magic. He rebelled against the Will of God by exposing his father to his brothers and not covering his father himself. As a father, I am sure Ham demanded the same respect from his sons, like his brothers, Shem, and Japheth had given their father, Noah.

He became involved in white magic when he tried to manipulate his brothers into seeing his father as something other than who God said he was. Maybe Ham said something like this, “Hey guys! Did you see dad in there? He is as drunk as a skunk. Can you believe it… this man of God! Spared from the flood! Supposed to be so holy and know God so well… Well, look at him now. How can God be pleased with THAT?! We are supposed to listen to what he has to say after this? How can we trust him now? I cannot believe a man who claims to know God as he did could ever do something like this! Does he think he has the right to tell me how to live my life? Blah, blah, blah… and so on.” White magic tries to manipulate others around you, to agree with you, when you don’t agree with what you have seen or heard.

Perhaps you have told God how to do what you think needs to be done, when you think it’s the right time for Him to do it, or you reason with God how He could change this Leader or Authority figure. Maybe you have even tried to pray your Leader or Authority figure out of their position.

What is that! It is not God. Cover your Leaders, those in Authority over you. Speak The Word, God’s Love, and God’s Will over their lives.

God places His Leaders and Authority figures in our lives to cover us, to protect us, to guide and instruct us, to help bring us into maturity. Are our leaders and authority figures perfect? No, but that is not the point. God said, "Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm." (1 Chronicles 16:22) and again in Psalms 105:15, saying, "Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm." He said it twice, so it must be a thought-provoking and important matter to Him. Will they fail, yes, for we find throughout The Scriptures that they did so. They are ever learning and ever growing. This is a continuing process for every child of God. The critical difference between God's Leaders and Authority figures and those who are not is this; they carry this overwhelming responsibility of always being on display before the eyes of man. They also accept the joy of the responsibility of loving God with everything that is within them — self-sacrifice. Most have laid down their lives to serve The Lord and have become the servant of man. To love, care for, help in any way they can any time of the day or night. Their hearts are first to serve God and then to serve people. Not for the things of this world, but people, to love them and see them saved, restored, healed, and set free, experiencing the fullness of what God has provided for them.

Being in a place of Leadership and Authority is difficult. There are many demands, yet God is their Strength and Ability, and His Grace never fails, so the rewards are greater than words can express. However, one of the most difficult and challenging battles a Leader or one in Authority faces, is words or judgments that come against them. Just like Noah, when he awoke from his wine and knew what his younger son had done to him. So also, God allows His Leaders and those in Authority to know when words and judgments come against them.

The results of this Principle of honoring or dishonoring those in Leadership and Authority is:

  • Rebellion opens the door of the enemy on you and your household.
  • White magic opens the door of the enemy on you and your household.

Covering, honoring, and love opens the door of our Father and brings a Blessing on you, your household, and future generations  Jesus warned: “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:37) If you have spoken against, dishonored, or been disrespectful of your Leaders or those in Authority over you, I encourage you to think about the consequences of your actions and ask Father to give you a new heart to love them with and for His eyes to see them with. When you find yourself in a place of disagreement or perhaps even have a complete difference of opinion with those in Leadership or with a person who is in Authority over you, you are to pray for them, pray that God’s Will to be accomplished in their lives. Let The Holy Spirit deal with them while you walk in love. As you earnestly pray, God will be Faithful to give you His Wisdom and Understanding, in and for every situation. Here is a pray from The Word in Ephesians 1:17-21(AMP) that may assist you in getting started and aid to guide you on how to pray over your Leaders and Authority figures on the way to supporting and covering them.

Lord, I ask You to grant those in Leadership and Authority the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation of Insight into Mysteries and Secrets — in the deep and intimate knowledge of You. By having the eyes of their hearts flooded with light, so that they can know and understand the Hope to which You have called them and how rich is Your Glorious Inheritance in them — Your set apart ones. So they can know and understand what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of Your Power in them, and for them as they believe, as demonstrated in the working of Your Mighty Strength which You exerted in Christ when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your own right hand in the heavenly places. Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named—above every title that can be conferred — not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and world which are to come. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Thank you, Father. Amen.

If you will not harden your hearts, but trust in God and His Ways, as you walk in His Principles, the Promise of God's Blessings are for you and your household. “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8)

Be aware that all attributes of The Most High God are capitalized out of love, respect, and reverence for The Trinity. Also be aware that the name satan, related names, and attributes are capitalized. I choose not to acknowledge or exemplify him even to the point of going against grammatical rules.
